GRACE HEATH'S FAMOUS FAMILY OF SCIENTISTS

Even though technically speaking this family of Heaths, do not originate from Staffordshire, I still feel they should be mentioned on this site. They contributed largely to Staffordshire and the country with advancements scientifically.

Grace Heath daughter of Joseph and Mary Heath was baptised on the 19th March 1826 Lucton Herefordshire. She married Oliver Lodge on the 11th September 1849 Bromley Kent. By the time of the 1851 census Oliver Lodge aged 25, Railway Writing Clerk, with his wife Grace also aged 25 and his brother Samuel Lodge aged 22 under graduate of Oxford were living in Penkhull. Also they employed a house servant, Elizabeth Brough, from Trentham Staffordshire.

On the 1861 census for Church Lane Wolstanton Staffordshire, Oliver Lodge was aged 35, now an agent wife Grace also aged 35, along with their children Henry aged 8, Alfred aged 7, Francis Heawood aged 3 and Charles aged 1 all born Penkhull. The 1871 census shows the Lodge family were now living at Chatterley House, Old Hall Street Hanley.

On the 1861 census finds Mary Heath aged 78. A clergyman's widow, living with her grand-daughter Susan M Forman aged 22 from Dover Kent, and grandson Richard Lodge aged 5 from Penkhull Staffordshire. Of Bromley Kent.

The will of Mary Heath of Bromley College in the county of Kent but late of Hanley n the county of Stafford, widow who died on the 12th August 1871 at Hanley. Was proved at Lichfield by Charlotte Anne Clendon, of Fitzroy Square Middlesex widow the daughter, one of the executrixes.

Mary Heath was buried at St Thomas's Church Penkhull. The ceremony was performed by Mary's son in law Rector John R Heawood, of Combs and Suffolk.

On the 22nd November 1879 the Staffordshire Sentinel states, the death on the 21st inst, to the great grief of her family Grace Lodge, wife of Oliver Lodge, Longport, after ten days illness, aged 54 years

Administration of the Personal Estate of Grace Lodge (wife of Oliver Lodge) late of the Watands in the Parish of Wolstanton Staffordshire died 21st November 1879 at the Watlands was proved at Lichfield to Oliver Lodge of the Watlands, agent. Grace Lodge was buried at the St Thomas Church Penkhull.

By the time of the 1881 census Oliver Lodge widower, aged 55 was still living at Watlands House Wolstanton, with his sons Alfred aged 27 a Solicitor, Richard 35 College Lecturer, Francis H aged 25 a Merchant.

The will of Oliver Lodge formerly of the Watlands near Longport in the County of Stafford, but late of the "Imperial Hydropathic Hotel Blackpool in the County of Lancaster, agent, who died the 23rd May 1884 at Blackpool was proved at the Principal Registry by Oliver Joseph Lodge of University College Liverpool, in the County of Lancaster, Doctor of Science, and Alfred Lodge of St John's College Oxford in the Fereday Fellows the sons and executors. Oliver Lodge was buried at St Thomas's Church Penkhull on the 24th May 1884.

Description from Wikipedia Oliver Joseph Lodge was British Physicist and writer involved in the development of, and holder of key patents for Radio.

Born on the 12th June 1851 the Views Penkhull, and was baptised on the 12th July 1851 St Thomas's Church Penkhull. At the time of Oliver's baptism is father's occupation was a railway clerk.

The Views Penkhull Stoke-on-Trent also became the home of the Legend Sir Stanley Matthews, who was born on the 1st February 1915 Seymour Street Hanley and died on the 23rd February 2000.

According to the 1861 census Oliver J Lodge was a private pupil living at High Street Newport Shropshire with fellow pupils and the head of the household John R Heawood aged 35 Master of the Grammar School and curate of Woodcote Salop, and his wife Emily Heawood aged 36.

Oliver Joseph Lodge attended the Adams Grammar School also in the High Street Newport Shropshire.In 1865 at the age of fourteen Oliver Joseph Lodge started to work in his father's business (Oliver Lodge & Son) as an agent to B Fayle & Co selling Purbeck blue clay to the potteries. He continued to work for his father to the age of twenty two. Oliver also attended physics lectures in London and the local Wedgwood Institute in Burslem Staffordshire. Oliver obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of London in 1875. Also a Doctor of Science in 1877 before his marriage on the 22nd August in the same year.

Oliver Joseph Lodge from the Watlands Longport Staffordshire married Mary Fanny Alexander Marshall of Brampton House Newcastle-under-Lyme Staffordshire in St George's church Newcastle-under-Lyme.

According to the 1881 census Oliver Joseph Lodge was either residing at the College in Egham Windsor or with his wife and infant son at 17 Parkland Road Islington, London.

In 1881 Oliver obtained the position of Professor of physics and mathematics at University College Liverpool. On the 1891 census Oliver wife and family were living in Toxteth Park Lancashire.

In 1900 Oliver became the First Principal of Birmingham University, and remained until his retirement, and was involved with the first part of the move from Edmund Street to the Edgbaston campus, which is still used today.

On the 1901 and 1911 censuses he and his family were living in Edgbaston Warwickshire. In 1902 Oliver Joseph Lodge was knighted by King Edward VII, and was made a Freeman in his native home of Stoke-on-Trent in 1928.

In 1903 Oliver Lodge founded Lodge Bros, which eventually became known as Lodge Plug Ltd., which was run by his sons.

Over the years Oliver Joseph Lodge sailed to Canada, Australia with his wife Mary, and New York in the United States.

Oliver also wrote a number of scientific and spiritual books which are still available to read today.

Dame Mary Fanny Alexander Lodge of Normanton House Lake near Salisbury (wife of Sir Oliver Joseph Lodge) died the 20th February 1929. Administration (with will) London the 8th June, to the said Oliver Joseph Lodge, knight, and Francis Brodie Lodge a manufacturer.

Lodge Sir Oliver Joseph knight of Normanton House Lake Salisbury died on the 22nd August 1940. Probate, Llandudno, on the 7th December to Francis Brodie Lodge, Lionel Lodge company directors and Noel Lodge chemist.

Buried at St Michael's churchyard, Wilsford, Salisbury Wiltshire.

Oliver Joseph and his wife Mary Fanny Alexander had twelve children six sons and six daughters. Oliver William Foster Lodge born 1878 Newcastle-under-Lyme Staffordshire baptised the 16th September 1878 St George's Church Newcastle-under-Lyme.

On the 1911 census he was living with his parent at the Mariemont Edgbaston Worcestershire, occupation architect aged 32. Also he was a writer and poet. Books are still available.

First marriage to Winifred Atkinson. Children. Second marriage to Violet Irene Mabel Uppinton. Children.

Brampton Side

Oliver William Foster Lodge, of Lud Hill House Upton, St Leonards, Gloucestershire. Died the 17th April 1955 at 28 Victoria Road, Cirencester, Gloucestershire. Probate, Gloucester to Frances Brodie Lodge, Noel Lodge company directors and Raymound William Wynlane Lodge, Barrister at law.

Francis Brodie Lodge was born on the21st February 1880 Islington London. Baptised on the 4th April 1880, St George's Newcastle-under-Lyme. Living Brampton House, Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Married Winifred Mackay Gunn on the 25th July 1909 at Llantilio, Pertholey, Monmouthshire. On the 1911 census he was living with his wife Winifred at 123 Lordswood, Harborne, Birmingham. Occupation, Manufacturer of Electric.

Francis Brodie Lodge second marriage was to Enid Mary Broadhent Hankinson, formerly Thompson, 1929, Brentford, Middlesex. On the 1939 Register Francis Brodie Lodge Managing Director of Lodge Plugs Ltd and his wife Enid M B born 16th November 1898 were living at Flore House, Flore, Daventry R.D. Northamptonshire.

Francis Brodie Lodge was buried at All Saints Flore, Northamptonshire on the 28th October 1967.

Along with his brother Alexander they went into partnership in 1904, as Lodge Brothers and later known as Lodge Plugs. See picture.

Graces Guide to British industrial History

Alexander Marshall Lodge born the second quarter of 1881 in Islington London, was baptised the 21st August 1881 St George's Church Newcastle-under-Lyme, of Brampton House, Newcastle-under-Lyme. Seemingly he was known as Alec.

Alexander Marshall Lodge was in partnership with his brother Francis Brodie Lodge of Lodge Plugs. See above picture.Died the 17th February 1938, of the Brampton, Lillington Road, Leamington Spa. Probate Birmingham 11th July to Francis Brodie Lodge, company director, and Noel Lodge, manufacturer.

Lionel Lodge born the 22nd May 1883 Toxteth Park Lancashire. Was baptised on the 9th September 1883 St George's Church Newcastle-under-Lyme, of Liverpool. On the 1911 census his occupation was an electrical engineer, and living with his parents.

By 1939 Lionel was living at Fiery Hill Road, Bromsgrove U.D. Worcestershire with his brother Noel and sister Norah. His occupation states that he was a Managing Director.
Lionel Lodge of The Wick Barnt Green Worcestershire, died the 26th May 1948. Probate at Birmingham on the 3rd December 1948 to Noel Lodge, manufacturer.
Noel Lodge was born on the 12 November 1885 Toxteth Park Lancashire. Was baptised on the 9th May 1886 St George's Church Newcastle-under-Lyme., of Liverpool.

1939 register shows Noel's occupation, was a Manager Electo Chemical. Also his brother Lionel and sister Norah were all living in the same property.

Noel Lodge also of The Wick 23 Fiery Hill Road Barnt Green Worcestershire died on the 21st January 1962. Probate was held at Birmingham to Norah Muriel Lodge spinster and Oliver Raymond William Wynlane Lodge Barrister at Law.

*Violet Mary Ashbourne Lodge aged 23 on the 1911 census. Violet Mary Ashburner Lodge married Rowland Waterhouse in 1915. Violet died on the 2nd January 1924, and buried at St Michael's churchyard Wilsford Salisbury Wiltshire. Violet, shared a memorial inscription with her brother Raymond Lodge. Find a Grave.

Raymond Lodge was born on the 25th January 1889 Toxteth Park Lancashire, and baptised at St George's Church Newcastle-under-Lyme on the 26th May 1889.

According to the 1911 census Raymond was an engineering student at Birmingham University.

Raymond Lodge, of the Mariemont, Westbourne Road, Edgbaston Birmingham. Second lieutenant in the 3rd battalion South Lancashire regiment, died 14th September 1915 at Flanders Belgium. Administration (with Will) Birmingham on the 12th October to Alexander Marshall Lodge, engineer.

Honor Grace Lodge, was born the first quarter 1891 Toxteth Park Lancashire. Baptised the 3rd June 1891 Newcastle-under-Lyme of Liverpool.

Died the 12th April 1979, of The Wick 23 Fiery Hill Road, Barnt Green. Probate Birmingham 4th June.

Lorna Lesley Lodge born 28th July 1892 Toxteth Park, Lancashire. She married John Basil Robert Langley. Birmingham Daily Gazette 30th July 1917.

John Basil Robert Langley of North Wraxall Rectory Chipenham Wiltshire. Lieutenant R.A.F. died on the15th May 1918 at Gosport Hampshire. Administration held at London on the 4th January 1919 to Lorna Lesley Langley widow.

He was killed as a result of an aeroplane accident.

Laura Lesley Langley was living in 1939 with her son Robert Langley, Cambridge Science Graduate born 30th April 1918, at Skef Stonehenge Road Amesbury Wiltshire.
Norah Muriel Elsie Lodge born the 15th June 1894

Norah lived with her brothers Lionel and Noel Lodge. She died on the 11th May 1990 at The Wick 23 Fiery Hill road Barnt Green Worcestershire.
Barbara Brodie Lodge was born on the 28th February 1896 at Toxteth Park Lancashire. (twin).

Barbara married Philip Godlee at St Michael's Church Wilsford Wiltshire. Wiltshire Times and Trowbridge Advertiser dated the 21st June 1924.

The 1939 register shows that they were living at, The Meadows Ryleys Lane Alderley Edge U.D. Cheshire. Director of Cotton Manufactures, and Calico Printing Company.
Philip Godlee of The White House Didsbury. Died on the 27th September 1952 at Manchester Royal Infirmary, Private Patient, Manchester.

Barbara Brodie Godlee died the 18th March 1983 Cheltenham Gloucestershire just three days before her twin sister Rosalynde.Rosalynde Vee Lodge twin sister to Barbara Brodie, married yesterday to Sir Harold Edgar Yarrow, of Craigent Castle, Milngaivne, Stirlingshire. Harold was the Chairman, and Managing Director of Messrs. Yarrow and Co, at St Michael's Church Wilsford Wiltshire. Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette dated the 7th February 1935. Sir Harold Edgar Yarrow died the 19th April 1962 at Overton Kilmacolm Renfrewshire.

Rosalynde Vee Yarrow died three days after her sister on the 21st March 1983 of Greenmount Nursing Home Cheltenham Gloucestershire.

Violet Mary Ashburner Lodge baptised the 9th June 1887 at St George's Church Newcastle-under-Lyme, of Liverpool.

Henry Lodge baptised the 21st January 1853, St Thomas's Church Penkhull Staffordshire.

Alfred Lodge was baptised on the 20th April 1854 St Thomas's Church Penkhull, by which time his father's occupation was an agent.
Alfred attended Horncastle Grammar School Lincolnshire. Afterwards he obtained a Bachelor of Arts at Magdalen College Oxford in 1876, followed by Master of Arts at St John's College in 1880.

On the 1881 census Alfred was living at Watlands House Wolstanton Staffordshire, and his occupation was a solicitor.
In 1884 Alfred joined the Royal Indian Engineering Company at Egham, where he became a Professor of Pure Mathematics in 1889.

On the 24th July 1890 Alfred Lodge gentleman, of Coopers Hill Egham, married Winifred Ada Derriman at St Peter, Eaton Square Pimlico, London.
1891 census shows Alfred Lodge, a Professor of Pure Mathematics and his wife Winifred living at Springfield Villa Egham.

In 1901 Alfred still a Professor of Pure Mathematics and his wife Winifred and their children are living at Coopers Hill Egham, Berkshire.
From 1904 Alfred became a master at Charterhouse School serving until after the end of the First World War.

And on the 1911 census for The Croft Pepperharrow Road, Godalming, Surrey Alfred Lodge aged 57 Schoolmaster Charterhouse School.
Over the years Alfred wrote a number of books about mathematics, which are still available.

Winifred Ada Lodge of Banbury Road Oxford wife of (Alfred Lodge) died the 6th September 1935 at Acland Home, Banbury Road Oxford. Probate at Oxford was granted the 28th September to the said Alfred Lodge, no occupation, and Frank Galpin a solicitor.

Alfred Lodge of Banbury Road Oxford died the 1st December 1937. Probate at Oxford was granted on the 14th January 1938, to Henry Galpin a solicitor and Frederick Henry Dodd physician and surgeon.

Richard Lodge was baptised on the 18th September 1855 at St Thomas's Church Penkhull Staffordshire. On the 27th June 1882 Richard Lodge of Oxford married Annie Gwendoline Morgan at St Peter and St John Kirkley Suffolk.

By the time of the 1891 census Richard Lodge was living at his in laws Henry and Mary Morgan in Kirkley Suffolk, occupation College Lecturer Oxford. His wife Annie Gwendoline Lodge and children Gwendoline, Herbert, Margaret, and Wilfred are living at 37 St Margarets Road Oxford.

From 1894 to 1899 Richard Lodge was Professor of History at Glasgow University, and then from 1899 to 1925 the Professor of History at Edinburgh University. In 1901 Richard Lodge Professor of History, his wife Annie, and children Gwendoline, Herbert, Margaret, Wilfred, Richard, Sylvia, and Janet were living at 25 Hope Terrace, Edinburgh.

Richard Lodge was knighted in 1917, and became Sir Richard Lodge. Richard and Annie's son Richard Cuthbert Lodge born the 4th April 1894 baptised St Philip and St James church Oxford.The will of Richard Cuthbert Lodge of 25 Hope Terrace Edinburgh, lieutenant of the16 Royal Scots, was killed in action on the 27th August 1917 in France.

Intestate confirmation was granted in Edinburgh on the 7th February to Sir Richard Lodge, Professor of History Edinburgh University, also residing at 25 Hope Terrace Edinburgh.
Richard Cuthbert Lodge, was Remembered with Honour Thiepval Memorial. Thiepval Departement de la Somme Picardie France. Panel and face 6D and 7D. Commonwealth War Graves and Find a Grave.

When the Commonwealth War Graves did their records of Richard Cuthbert Lodge, his parents Sir Richard and Lady Lodge address was Lane End, Harpenden Hertfordshire.
The will of Gwendoline Mary Lodge or Watson the wife of the honourable Adam George Watson of 12 Abercromby Place Edinburgh died on the 16th November 1918.

Herbert Lodge died 19th February 1919. There is also an inscription for his brother Richard Cuthbert Lodge, as above, and Margaret Beatrice Lodge who died the 3rd January 1979. Burial at Grange Cemetery Edinburgh Scotland. Find a Grave. Sir Richard Lodge was also an author, and the books are still available today, and are interesting to read.

In 1929 to 1933 Richard was President of the Royal Historical Society. Sir Richard Lodge of Lane End, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, died on the 2nd August 1936. Probate was granted in London on the 30th November 1936 to Dame Annie Gwendoline Morgan or Lodge and the Honourable Adam Watson, the Executors.

Richard's funeral service was held on the 6th August 1936 at All Saints Oxford. Buried at St Cross Churchyard, Holywell, Oxford. Dame Annie Gwendoline Lodge of Lane End, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, widow, died on the 14th September 1959. Probate was held at London on the 30th November to Ronald Kenneth Watson writer to the Signet.
Annie Gwendoline's funeral service was held on the 18th September 1959 at All Saints Oxford, aged ninety seven years.

Janet Helen Lodge was living 63 Abbey Road St Marylebone in 1939. Date of birth the 1st July 1899. Occupation, given Assistant Organiser to the Education Department. She died a spinster at 63 Abbey Road Mansions, London on the 21st April 1962 at St Lukes Hospital Bayswater Road Paddington London. Probate was held in London on the 10 January to Oliver Raymond William Wynlane Lodge Barrister at Law, and Stephen Naunton Young solicitor.

Herbert George Lodge, was born in the third quarter of 1856, Stoke. On Staffordshire BMD mother's maiden name shown as Heath. Herbert George was buried on the 9th October 1856 aged five weeks, at St Thomas's church Penkhull Staffordshire.

Francis Heawood Lodge baptised the 18 July 1858 St Thomas's Penkhull Staffordshire. Married Clara Lodge in 1884 Horncastle Lincolnshire.

On the1891 census Francis Heawood Lodge occupation merchant and potters material was living with his wife Clara and children Alice C, Humphrey, Brenda and Geoffrey B were living at Aston Hall Stone Staffordshire.

By 1901 census they had moved to Tillington Manor Stafford, and daughter Phylis May. Frances Heawood Lodge of Brocton Staffordshire, died on the 8th June 1912. Probate was at London on the 21st October to Clara Lodge widow.

Geoffrey Brettingham Lodge baptised the 16th March 1889 St Margaret's Wolstanton Staffordshire. Geoffrey joined the Australian Infantry on the 27th October 1916.
Geoffrey Brettingham Lodge died of his wounds on the 27th September 1917. Buried Hodge Crater Cemetery, Ypres (Leper) Arrondissement, West Flanders (West Vlaanderen) Belgium.

Charles Septimus Lodge baptised the 14th August 1859 St Thomas's Church Penkhull Staffordshire. On the 1871 census Charles Septimus Lodge was a pupil at Christ Hospital Christchurch London. Charles Septimus Lodge in 1883 married Amelia Smith at Chorlton Lancashire.

On the 1901 census Charles Septimus Lodge was living with his wife Amelia and children Dorothy, Rupert C, Maurice, Frances A, Kenneth A, Lois M, and Guy L at 8 Acomb Street Manchester.

The 1911 census shows that Charles Septimus occupation Tutor of Classics and his wife Amelia were still living at 8 Acomb Street, with Rupert Clendon a Lecturer in Philosophy at Manchester University, and Frances Audrey Student at Manchester University. Also the 1911 census Dorothy Lodge is an Assistant Teacher of Classics at St Michael's Lodge Devonport. Ernest Octavus Lodge was baptised the 24th January 1869 St Margaret's Church Wolstanton Staffordshire.

Eleanor Constance Lodge was born on the 18th September 1869 Hanley Staffordshire. Was baptised Ellen Constance Lodge on the 30th September 1869 at St John's Church Hanley. Address Old Street Hanley.

On the 1881 census Eleanor Constance was boarding at Tettenhall Road Wolverhampton as a scholar. The 1911 census she was a visitor, staying with the Cornish family at Clarence Place Penzance Cornwall. Eleanor occupation was a History Tutor.

From 1900 to 1921 Eleanor was the Vice Principal of Lady Margaret Hall Oxford. And from 1921 to 1931 Eleanor Constance Lodge was the Principal of Westfield College Hampstead London.

In 1928 Eleanor Constance Lodge was the first lady to be awarded a D.Litt by the University of Oxford for her work in modern history. Also Eleanor is the author of many books which are still available to read today.

Eleanor Constance Lodge of 5 Fyfield Road Oxford, a spinster, died on the 19th March 1936, at New Lodge Windsor Forest Berkshire. Probate at Oxford on the 18th May to Sir Richard Lodge and Alfred Lodge retired professor of mathematics.

Eleanor Constance Lodge was buried at Wolverdale Cemetery Oxford. Find a Grave. Additional information would be welcome.
